Jamie
Derbyshire began his racing career racing Karts in the British
Championships in 1997. The bug was sown after his older brother,
Adam, began racing karts a few years earlier.
After three years in karts a move into bigger machinery was inevitable
and he entered the Caterham Roadsport Championship in 2001. The beginning
of his sportscar learning curve began with three race victories and
a handful of podium finishes. A championship win was on the cards
right up until the final round and had he finished in the position
he started the race, his first title would have been clinched. However,
a collision in the final race meant that third place was the end
of season result.
After a year of Caterham Roadsports, a progression to the faster
Superlight series looked on the cards. However, a switch to the Radical
Enduro Championship was his final decision for 2002, partnering his
brother, Adam, in the two-hour race format series.
The Radical Championship
is widely regarded as the fastest one-make series in the UK and
four outright race wins, one pole position and
two lap records during the year was testament to Jamie’s speed
and talent of adapting to machinery quickly.
A one-off race at Thunderhill Raceway in California in a Radical
at the end of the season saw Jamie pick up another out-right race
win before starting to think about the 2003 race season.
A move into something
bigger and more high profile was the aim and GT racing was the
primary target for 2003. A deal with the Balfe
Motorsport was done and a drive in the team’s Mosler MT900R
in the British GT Championship.
Alongside team mate Shaun Balfe, Jamie took a sensational six race
victories before a collision at the final round of the season meant
they could only take runner-up in the championship.
In 2004 Jamie moved into the big league with a drive in a Lister
Storm GT1 car with the Creation Autosportif team in the FIA GT Championship.
A mixed year of results left him frustrated for more success and
in 2005 he made a return to the Balfe Motorsport team and its Mosler
once again, this time in the GT2 class of the FIA GT series.
Four wins in the G2 class
and running as the fastest privateer team against a pair of factory
backed Porsches gave Jamie more GT racing
success. However, his season wasn’t over yet.
As one of four
drivers in another Mosler, Jamie wrote himself into the history
books as the first winner of the Britcar 24 Hour race
on the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit in September 2005.
At the end
of 2005 he was lucky enough to be given a test in a factory Courage
LMP2 car at the Bugatti circuit at Le Mans. A serious look
at a drive in a prototype for 2006 was called for. But, Jamie has
decided to stay with the Balfe Motorsport team that he has shared
so much success with over the last three years and will take on
the might of Maserati, Corvette and Aston Martin this season in
a 650hp
7-Litre Saleen S7R.
